Uh oh. I wish I could say I don’t feel this chick. But today, I kind of do.
The Five of Cups is always a difficult card to see in a reading. (Notice I didn’t say “bad.”Little quirk of mine, I don’t want to call cards “bad” even if I hate to see them! But it’s hard energy for sure.)
Here’s what you need to know, when you see the Five of Cups:
- It’s a period of mourning. The grief will lessen and pass.
- “All” is not lost, although it may well feel like it is in the moment. There are still those remaining cups!
- It’s most likely the low point. So let the tears fall as they may, let yourself feel whatever there is to feel. Then, you’ll be ready to get on with the living thing.
Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of quick fixes for Five of Cups grief—or any other kind of grief, so far as I can tell. It’s definitely something that has to be endured and processed.
On the plus side, feeling the sadness means you had something worth losing to begin with, you know? And the sting always dulls, a little further down the road. So hang in there, and reach out to your people if you can. Most would be glad to help. Everybody has been there, one time or another.
Are you feeling sad?

Without sadness would we value joy quite as much?
I can look around our world and see so many things that bring me sadness but it is many of those things that show me just how good I have it in life.
Mist, I totally agree with that sentiment, that it’s in ability to feel the full range of emotions our lives are enriched. It’s all part of the same range, you know? Blunted ability to feel pain = limited ability to feel joy as well.
