12/22/11: Wait and Receive | High Priestess

high-priestess-meaningOne of my tribe described me as “Mercury’s Child” and it’s a fitting description. My mind never stops. “Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah!” That’s exactly what it’s like in my head. So mastering Tarot presented a significant challenge initially, as a chronic over-thinker. It’s a bit of a trick right off, learning what’s coming in on the radar verses what’s being generated right here by the bossy brain. It’s damn hard to get incoming signals when the mind stays in broadcast mode. It takes conscious, ongoing practice to switch over to receive.

Today’s Tarot is the High Priestess, associated with the Moon. Much like the Magician generates and channels his own energy, the High Priestess receives and contains others’ energy. She’s Yin to his Yang. Many readers identify with her, because she’s a mystic, keeper of secrets and receiver of profound, hidden wisdom. But she does not generate that wisdom directly. It’s gifted to her, via her capacity to receive. If you want to emulate her wisdom, you have to learn to receive it.

When you see the High Priestess, the prescribed course is quite simple: wait. Truth will come to you. You don’t have to seek. Clear, open yourself up to the sight, and…yes, just wait. Accept. Listen. Let go of assumptions to make room for whatever comes. Be a cup, ready to be filled. Your attention is pulled to the insights available for you, as they arrive gift-wrapped in the mundane. If you’re too busy talking, you’ll completely miss it!

Hers is a very quiet power—don’t let her passive approach fool you. Many underestimate her, after all. But that’s fine. Let them look the other way. She’s still there, always the same, always open, always feeling her way through the layers. She’ll show you the way, if you can be quiet enough to listen.

  1. Sure feeling this! VERY quiet. Sitting still. I always have an ummm…interesting time around the winter solstice. I get really quiet until about the 23rd. THEN I feel like celebrating Christmas a bit. But up until then….not so much. So today, being quiet and listening!
    Thanks, Dixie!

  2. Yes, she has popped her head in a few times with me lately. I understand your mercurian tendencies and can liken them to my cardinal tendencies. My nature is to go in and DO. Whenever something is up I feel as if I need to take action and do something. But, there are times when it is best to sit back, be still and allow things to unfold as they will. I can tell ya what, that is one of the hardest things for me to do. I have to give myself permission to sit still and then give myself permission to accept my permission.

What does the trick for me is my desire for wisdom and my mantra has been “it is never wise to act impulsively upon insight.” You have to let a delicious soup simmer for awhile..dontcha?
