08/16/12: Surrendering to Death

“It hath been often said, that it is not death, but dying, which is terrible.” HENRY FIELDING, Amelia

I have a little trash TV confession: I watch Cheaters. I know, I know, it’s a lowbrow show with lots of manufactured drama, but I don’t care. It’s interesting to me, to see how people behave in the intense, emotionally-laden context of infidelity. (And okay, some of them are funny. Hey. Don’t judge me!)

One thing you’ll see frequently is the suspicious party saying they want things to be “just like they used to be.” It’s a given to me, if a relationship has made it to the point of being Cheaters’ material, that’s damn unlikely. It doesn’t mean some will not reconcile, sure. But like it was? Eh.

“It ain’t ever gonna be like it was before.” In a nutshell, that’s the message of Death. We’re not necessarily talking a literal dying (although sometimes), but more often, a Scorpio brand of transformative death.

Card readers sometimes prefer the symbolic death of healthy transformation spin, focusing on the Phoenix’s arising from the ashes. That’s the upside. Yeah, yeah, I hear you.

But truth be told, this is HARD energy, no sugar-coating the reality it’s often excruciatingly painful. Even Mary-Freakin’-Poppins-of-Woo-Woo-Love-and-Light is likely to have hairy moments. So cut yourself some slack if this is where you’re at, okay?

If you develop a few coping skills—like these, courtesy a hard-nosed Pluto transit I survived—it can go easier.

  • Avoid clinging and denial. Death, like anything Pluto-flavored, tends to gives a lot of warning. It takes a lot of energy to maintain an illusion there is nothing going on. Even if you do manage to put it off, sooner or later there is no more Snooze-buttoning to be had. It’s hard coming from under the covers, but hiding your head won’t slay the monster. You you need to know the difference between monster dirty clothes. But hey. The light can also save you from tripping over bodies or getting clobbered with skeletons tumbling from the closet. Har! “Conscious, humble and flexible” are good keywords.
  • Keep integrating lessons as you go. Temperance follows Death in the deck; it’s the natural progression. WHAT can you  integrate? How can Death change how you live? How can the new life that be for a higher good? This is where the gifts show up. It also helps mitigate the ouch factor, creating the conditions for an evolution.
  • Stay in the present. Energy gets scattered under stress, and you need the best quality of energy you can generate now. Pay attention to how you care for yourself physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Look for activities that soothe raw nerves. Pay attention to the people you spend time with. Auras can get compromised when you hurt and you’re more prone to pick up “energetic lint.” Surround yourself with as much loving vibe as you can. It eases aches and raises the overall vibration to aid healing.
  • Surrender. No one stops the reaper. Death touches all. We don’t get choice on whether, only on how. By the time Death shows up, the status quo is no longer an option. Facing that truth square-on makes it possible to begin constructing new options.

It’s in within the surrender that Death’s gifts are given. Energy never dies—it’s transformed into other creations. Without death, there can be no new life.

  1. Yes, i can definitely feel this card’s energy in my life. It’s been exhausting and exhilarating and also deeply painful, if any of that makes any sense. I can feel that life is about to change.
