In the Zodiac Tarot, the focus is strictly on the astrology. But even without the traditional trappings of the Two of Swords, the parallels with this version is not hard to see. The courtroom scene shows evidence being weighed—fairly, we would hope as anything but would upset the Moon in Libra!
Especially interesting is that the diagram shows a crossroads. Crossroads have long been recognized as significant, from ancient South American cultures, Greeks, Romans, Native Americans, and more all have ties to the crossroads. Hermes was said to linger at crossroads, as was Hecate, goddess of sorcery. In the African American Hoodoo magical tradition, crossroads are extremely important and you’ll often find references to them in old blues songs (along with other mentions of magical practice). Crossroads were often considered a place where the veil was thin between this world and the spirit world.
Of course here, we are at a decision point. And like the magical crossroads associations of old, these points are places where reality is flexible, where the choices made impact the rest of your journey, so it makes sense to choose wisely. The person who is on the path, learning and growing, will find themselves standing at many crossroads. Always, always, choose wisely.
Recognizing the crossroads is the first part of the equation. The second part is making that decision, of course! Existentialists would tell us, not making a decision IS a decision, you know. It’s that “prison of choices,” there’s no way to avoid it. It is part of being alive. And this is the magic you’re working when you find yourself standing at a crossroads.
My memories of personal crossroads are of intense, highly charged turning points in my life. In some cases, just a few words made a huge impact on the rest of my life. That’s worth considering, every time you see this card or a variation. What you choose here may well be with you for a very long time. Use every bit of honesty and integrity you can must in weighing it out, and you’ll end up with a choice you can live with, we hope!
